La Cueva de Los Verdes, is located in the north of Lanzarote at the district of Haria. It is a part of the underground tunnel of volcanic formation of lava tubes about 6 kms in length.

Cueva De Los Verdes

The caves and galleries emerged during a prehistoric eruption of the volcano Mount of La Corona, more than 4,000 years ago. A wide stream of lava rushed towards the east coast deep into the sea. Once it met the sea the lava solidified. The lava streams cooled on top,  developing a solid crust, before the lava drained away leaving the top part as the roof of a cave. In about 20 spots, the roof of the cave collapsed, forming a cavern known locally as a Jameo. The caves extend for 6 kms above sea level and for another 1.5 kms below the sea which is called the Tunnel de la Atlantida.

In 1964 a 2 kms portion of the total area was developed for tourim purposest.  A sophisticated lighting lends theatrical effects to this natural monument. The cave is also famous for its concert hall which is located near the entrance  / exit of the cave. The concert hall has about 15 to 20 rows with 26 seats in each row, allowing up to 500 people in the concert hall at once. The famous lighting expert Mr Jesus Soto has also designed the lighting for this monument giving it a brilliant effect.

Cueva de los Verdes derives it name from its former owner the “Verdes” family. The cave lies within the Monumento Natural del Malpaís de La Corona, a protected area of Lanzarote.
